Garo s67, Susumu Katsumata Special

Garo #67, Oct., '69. Cover by Susumu Katsumata. 266 pages.
As may be obvious, this issue is dedicated to the manga of Susumu Katsumata, who has been a frequent contributor of 3- and 4-panel gag strips to Garo since June, 1966. The issue consists primarily of reprints. There is one story featuring a kappa that I hadn't seen before, plus a couple short gags by people paying tribute to Susumu, including Yuu Takita and Seiichi Hayashi. And there's a couple short articles. I'm not going to repeat the other Susumu gags here - if you want to look at them, check out the Media Fire gallery.

You may notice a problem with the issue numbering again, with 2 #67's coming out. That happens with Garo occasionally.

かっぱ郎 (Kapparou)

By Susumu Katsumata (勝又進). 14 pages. This is a featured manga on Nihon-go Hunter this week.
A young kappa tries to fit in as a farmer in the countryside, with poor results.

勝又進 作品集 (Katsumata's Creation Collection)
By Susumu Katsumata (勝又進). 240 pages.
Technically it's approx. 240 pages of short panel reprints, plus some ads for other Garo reprints. But, they're scattered a bit throughout the magazine, rather than being all lumped together.

一人四コマの孤塁を守る (One Person Protecting the 4-Panel Stronghold)
By Shouichi Sakurai (桜井昌一). 1 page.
A simple 1-page discussion of Susumu's work. Shouichi also appeared in the Yuu Takita special, #59.

ちんちんマーチ (Jingle March)

By Seiichi Hayashi (林静一). 2 pages.
Actually, there are several ways to translate "chinchin", including "animal", among other less polite meanings. The first page is a short essay. The second is a dead-on imitation of Susumu's art style.

カンバスがそこにあるから。。。 (Because there's a Canvas...)

By Yuu Takita (滝田ゆう). 2 pages.
3 short,single panel jokes.

あのシンラツな語り口 (That Bitter Way of Storytelling)
By Maki Sasaki (佐々木まき). 1 page.

目常性の身勝手さを撃つ (Attacking Selfish Society)
By Jun Kajii (梶井純). 2 pages.
Jun (1941-) is a manga critic, principally focusing on the works of Yoshiharu Tsuge, according to the Japanese wiki. There's no real info on him in English.

まじめなまじめなまじめなマンガ (Serious, Serious, Serious Manga)
By Koushi Ueno (上野昴志). 2 pages.
Article. There's no real info on Kushi in English, although there is a mention of him as a critic mc-ing a panel at the 2010 Osaka Asian Film Festival (Mar. 6-16).
