Rifle Range

Given Japan's strict anti-gun laws, it's kind of strange coming across a rifle range in the hills a few miles from downtown. The sign to the left says "Kagoshima Rifle rifle range". It was a Sunday, and there were only 2 cars in the parking lot. No sounds of gunfire, either.

See that hill in the back? The road I'm on snakes around to the top of it.

At the top of the hill, looking down.

Certain parts of Japan do have authorized rifle hunting of wild game. A few weeks ago, there was a TV documentary on the shrinking numbers of hunters in Hokkaido. The cameras followed some of the hunters around, while talking about the problems of having fewer trained people for handling wild animals that find their way into small towns. Having seen wild boar in Kagoshima City, I guess there may be some authorized rifle hunting here in Kyushu as well.
