The space in front of the Yamakataya department store was set up to handle the crush of parents trying to get tailored school uniforms for their children entering school for the new academic year. Preorders were taken during the entire weekend.
With a government-ordered 2-week closure of all schools due to Covid-19, and a cancellation of graduation and school entrance activities, plus the postponement of new employee welcoming ceremonies at companies country-wide, Yamakataya may have over-estimated the demand for their services. Abe's 10% sales tax increase in October has been depressing shopping behaviors, too.
